Desolation Sound
Desolation Sound is one of the most spectacular cruising grounds in British Columbia or perhaps the entire world. This area at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast boasts the steepest drop from mountain tops, soaring as high as 7875 feet, to the depths of the ocean floor as deep as 2500 feet. Turning the corner of Malaspina Peninsula into Desolation Sound reminds us of our Alaskan travels with its grandeur and unending vistas. Glacial melt is seen in the numerous waterfalls in these fjords but the seawater temperatures are warm enough for swimming for the not so timid. July and August are high season with June and September finding the bays and anchorages much less crowded. With a Canadian license, you can harvest oysters fresh off the beach to throw on the barbeque.
A charter to Desolation Sound is a twelve day trip from Anacortes although one-way charters are an option.
