Weather and Water Conditions in the Pacific Northwest
The Pacific Northwest has a reputation of being wet. However, the San Juan Islands get's approximately half the rain that falls in Seattle. This is due to the "rain shadow" created by the Olympic Mountains. Year 'round temperatures are comfortable. Although rain does occur, it is usually light and rarely rains all day long. The sun doesn’t set during midsummer until almost 10:00 pm, allowing more play time than in most latitudes. These cruising grounds are also sheltered from the open sea swell by Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula. Locally created waves are broken by the large number of islands in this grouping. Many calm, safe anchorages are available when needed.
Vacationers in the summer can expect light winds, lots of sun, average highs in the 70's and a small chance of rain. During Spring and Fall, you can expect stronger, more consistent winds, more precipitation and average highs around 60.
